Short Breaks & Respite Care

Providing families with essential support

At Young Crisis Hub, we understand the challenges families face when caring for young people with complex needs. Our short breaks and respite care services offer temporary relief, allowing families to recharge while ensuring their loved ones receive high-quality, compassionate care.

What are short breaks and respite care?

Short Breaks, also known as Respite Care, provide children and young people with opportunities to spend time away from their primary carers. These breaks can take place during the day, evening, overnight, weekends, or school holidays, and can occur in various settings such as the child’s home, an approved carer’s home, a residential setting, or a community location.

These services are designed to:

  • Offer enjoyable experiences for young people
  • Allow carers to take a break from their caregiving responsibilities
  • Promote social interaction and community engagement
  • Support the development of life skills and independence

Who benefits from edge of care?

Our short breaks and respite care services are available to children and young people who:

  • Have Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND)
  • Require additional support due to emotional, behavioural, or mental health challenges
  • Are at risk of family breakdown due to caregiving pressures

If you’re unsure whether your child or young person qualifies, please contact us for a consultation.

Our Approach

We work closely with families, local authorities, and Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) to design personalised short break packages that meet the unique needs of each young person. Our services are flexible and can be tailored to include:

  • Daytime activities: Engaging in community events, leisure activities, or educational workshops
  • Overnight stays: Providing a safe and supportive environment for short-term residential care
  • In-home support: Assisting with daily routines and personal care within the young person’s home
  • Community outings: Encouraging socialisation and participation in local events

Art therapy is tailored to each client and scheduled to meet their individual needs. We offer remote sessions that can be accessed from the comfort of your own home.

Like other forms of therapy, art therapy can support clients in understanding and managing emotional difficulties and distress. The inclusion of art-making offers an additional dimension—allowing clients to slow down and engage in ‘play’ within a safe, supportive therapeutic relationship.
